On July 26, 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed Executive Order 9981 — officially desegregating the United States Armed Forces. For decades, Black soldiers had fought and died for a country that refused to treat them as equals in uniform. This order didn’t just change the military. It cracked the foundation of institutionalized segregation in America and set the stage for the civil rights battles that followed.
